Currently, we all have a challenge finding high-quality stories that fully engage us without radically stressing our nervous system by relying on dark themes or horror to generate the sensation of suspense or excitement.
Neurobiologically, this is very effective at getting humans stuck in addiction to stress hormones and neurochemicals as the only way to “feel alive.”
For those of us who crave stories about magic, the fantastical, the paranormal, and the supernatural, virtually every story available out there will take you into a dark and twisty road before delivering you into any form of happy conclusion (if it even has that).
Big Stories in The Wild is a publishing and multimedia project I’ve been developing for several years and am finally launching the first phase now!
Via Big Stories in The Wild, I will be publishing three series of stories all set in the world of the Seven Stars, which is our own world with more of the magic layers revealed! (see here to read more about these three series!)
I will also work with investors to bring these stories from the page to the screen and ultimately also add other creators’ stories into the catalogue as well.
Big Stories in The Wild is designed to evolve the global cultural paradigm of stories used for entertainment to align with the current evolutionary leap of humanity. Humanity is in the early stages of an evoleap into an expansive and light-filled species in which the unique essence of each being is celebrated and connected across the globe and throughout the cosmos.
We are creating an entirely new literary genre of exhilarating stories of magic to awaken and anchor this leap. These stories are suspenseful and exciting without trashing your nervous system.
We are calling this new genre: JOYFUL FANTASY!
Joyful fantasy NOURISHES your nervous system and your heart while ensuring you are getting a thrilling and exhilarating ride in a magical world!
High stakes fantasy without the usual dark tropes, these stories are great for all ages.
Vibrant characters moving through exciting and high stakes plots that are uplifting instead of anxiety creating.
The newer fiction categories of "cozy" and "sweet" are creating some progress, but they tend to be a bit ho-hum or treacly at times. It's time we expanded beyond Hallmark level artistry. (not to trash or dismiss that, we just require more!)
What are some of the common dark tropes you won’t have to engage with in Joyful Fantasy? Here are a few:
Falling in love with a magical being who might kill you at any moment or who is already holding you captive
Physical fighting with gore
Constantly being on the run from the bad guys
Watching loved ones be killed
Children or animals being killed or tortured
S3xual and physical abuse/trauma
If this excites you, please know that I need your help! Creating a new literary genre and marketing any sort of genre-busting books is a massive challenge.
We are cutting fully against the grain of the dominant cultural structures and the ways they are ingrained in our technology platforms for sharing content. Think of the Amazon and GoodReads book categories. Search for a minute across fantasy and other subcategories. You will quickly discover all the stories have the same or similar flavor: excruciating negative experience is required to get to the conclusion of the story.
